You Must Remember the Words of the Apostles

Without the presence and influence of the Spirit, the things of God will appear as foolishness.

YOU MUST REMEMBER THE WORDS OF THE APOSTLES
JUDE 16-19

Grumblers;
EXODUS 15:24
24 And the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?”

JOHN 6:41
41 So the Jews grumbled about him, because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”

1 CORINTHIANS 10:10
10 …nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer.

The Scriptures treat grumbling with great severity.

Fault-finders;
ROMANS 9:19
19 You will say to me then, “Why does he still find fault?...”

2 CORINTHIANS 6:3
3 …so that no fault may be found with our ministry,

ROMANS 2:1
1 Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things.

PHILIPPIANS 4:11–13
11 Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. 12 I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

The fault-finder/murmurer is the antithesis of the faithful disciple, and a hallmark of the one who turns their back on the faith.

Loud-mouthed boasters;
PROVERBS 16:5
5 Everyone who is arrogant in heart is an abomination to the LORD…

DANIEL 7:8 (See also vv. 11, 20)
8 …And behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking great things.

REVELATION 13:5–6
5 And the beast was given a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words, and it was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months. 6 It opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against God, blaspheming his name and his dwelling, that is, those who dwell in heaven.

2 THESSALONIANS 2:4
4 [The Man of Lawlessness] opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God.

Prideful boasting is presented as the dominant characteristic of the antichrist.

Showing favoritism to gain advantage;
PROVERBS 26:28
28 A lying tongue hates its victims, and a flattering mouth works ruin.

ROMANS 16:18
18 For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.

LEVITICUS 19:15
15 “You shall do no injustice in court. You shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor.

DEUTERONOMY 16:19
19 You shall not pervert justice. You shall not show partiality, and you shall not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and subverts the cause of the righteous.

JAMES 2:1, 9
1 My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory…9 But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.

MARK 9:35
35 And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”

Flattery for self-advancement is completely at odds with the Kingdom of God.

You must remember;
2 PETER 1:12
12 Therefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have.

PSALM 119:49
49 Remember your word to your servant, in which you have made me hope.

1 CORINTHIANS 15:1
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand,

PSALM 119:11
11 I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

PSALM 119:105
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

2 TIMOTHY 4:2
2 Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.

Remembering the apostles’ words is not an act of recalling, but concentrated focus.

The predictions of the apostles;
ACTS 20:28–32
28 Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood. 29 I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; 30 and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them… 32 And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up…

HEBREWS 6:1
1 Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity…

False teachers always prey on the weakest Christians.

Scoffers;
2 PETER 3:3–4
3 …knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires. 4 They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.”

HEBREWS 11:3
3 By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

Scoffers will often focus their scoffing on the creation and the return of Christ, for the two are connected.

Ungodly passions;
ROMANS 13:14
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

1 THESSALONIANS 4:5
5 …not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God.

Cause divisions;
3 JOHN 9–10
9 I have written something to the church, but Diotrephes, who likes to put himself first, does not acknowledge our authority…

1 CORINTHIANS 1:10
10 I appeal to you, brothers… that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind…

PHILIPPIANS 2:2
2 …complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.

JOHN 17:21
21 …that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

1 CORINTHIANS 11:19
19 …for there must be factions among you in order that those who are genuine among you may be recognized.

MATTHEW 13:24–25
24 …“The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field, 25 but while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away.

The presence of false teachers in the Body necessitates division.

Devoid of the Spirit;
1 CORINTHIANS 2:13–14
13 And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual. 14 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.

1 CORINTHIANS 1:27–28
27 But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; 28 God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are.

ROMANS 8:9
9 You…are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.

EPHESIANS 1:13–14
13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it…

Without the presence and influence of the Spirit, the things of God will appear as foolishness.
