This Is He Who Baptizes with the Holy Spirit
The Spirit remained on Jesus of Nazareth, making Him our supreme example.
THIS IS HE WHO BAPTIZES WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT
JOHN 1:30-34
The baptism event;
LUKE 3:21–22
21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”
God equips the called;
1 THESSALONIANS 5:24
24 He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.
The Christ is not discovered, but revealed.
JUDE 3
3 …I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.
JOHN 9:39–40
39 Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.”
ACTS 26:18
18 to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’
Also: 2 Corinthians 4:4-6, Ephesians 1:18, Isaiah 35:5, Luke 2 30-32
―The Spirit comes and remains on the Christ―
Jesus is the first to have the Spirit come upon Him and remain;
JUDGES 14:6
6 Then the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon him, and although he had nothing in his hand, he tore the lion in pieces as one tears a young goat…
JUDGES 16:20
20 And she said, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” And he awoke from his sleep and said, “I will go out as at other times and shake myself free.” But he did not know that the LORD had left him.
PSALM 51:11
Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
To fulfill the Scriptures;
ISAIAH 11:2
2 And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.
To equip the Man;
ISAIAH 61:1–3
1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; 2 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; 3 to grant to those who mourn in Zion— to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified.
To anoint the Christ to give the Spirit;
JOHN 3:34
34 For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure.
JOHN 20:22
22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”
―The Baptism of the Spirit―
What is the baptism of the Spirit;
JOHN 3:5
5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.”
The baptism of fire;
MATTHEW 3:10–12
10 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 11 “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
REVELATION 20:15
15 And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
The baptism of the Spirit: regeneration. The baptism of fire: judgment.
The prominence of the Spirit in John;
JOHN 3:5-6, 8
5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit…8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
JOHN 3:34
34 For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure.
JOHN 4:23–24
23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
JOHN 6:63
63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
JOHN 7:39
39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
JOHN 14:17
17 …even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
JOHN 14:26
26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
JOHN 15:26
26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.
JOHN 16:13
13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth…
JOHN 20:22
22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”
It is the work of the Spirit to bring both life and understanding.
The purpose;
JOHN 20:30–31
30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
The Son of God in John;
JOHN 3:16–18
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
JOHN 6:40–42
40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.” 41 So the Jews grumbled about him, because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”
JOHN 10:36
36 …do you say of him whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’?
JOHN 19:7
7 The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.”
The Son is sent by the Father, and uniquely equipped to give the Spirit to all who are put into Christ by faith.
