There Was a Man Sent from God

All who are saved will be saved through a human witness.

There Was a Man Sent from GodJohn 1:6-8, 15
00:00 / 49:03

The importance of witnesses;
MATTHEW 5:16
16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

MATTHEW 5:14
14 You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.

ACTS 1:8
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.

ROMANS 10:17
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

Though the Light needs no human witnesses, God chooses to do His Kingdom work through human witnesses.

The focus of witnesses;
1 CORINTHIANS 2:2
2 For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.

1 PETER 4:10–11
10 As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: 11 whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God…in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ…

John the Witness teaches the believer that true and right witness points to Christ alone.

Salvation only comes through witnesses;
ROMANS 10:13–15
13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”

LUKE 10:1
1 After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go.

No human is saved except through the testimony of a human witness.

The Sender of witnesses;
JOHN 20:21
21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.”

MATTHEW 9:38
38 “…therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”

ISAIAH 59:1
1 Behold, the LORD’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save…

While God chooses that all who believe will believe through the testimony of human witnesses―this does not mean that God is beholden to human witnesses.

The role of a witness;
JOHN 1:19–20
19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20 He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.”

JOHN 1:21–22
21 And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22 So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

JOHN 1:26–27
26 John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, 27 even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.”

JOHN 3:28–30
28 You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, ‘I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him.’ 29 The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease.”

2 CORINTHIANS 4:5
5 For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake.

John the Witness teaches the believer that true witness to the Light points away from self.
