The Word Became Flesh and Dwelt Among Us

The Incarnation is the most fundamental truth of the Christian faith.

THE WORD BECAME FLESH AND DWELT AMONG US
JOHN 1:14A

The standard of all Christian faith;
1 JOHN 4:1–3
1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.

1 JOHN 1:1–3
1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— 2 the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— 3 that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.

1 JOHN 2:22–24
…23 No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also…

1 JOHN 4:14–15
14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.

1 JOHN 5:1
1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him.

1 JOHN 5:4–5
4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

2 JOHN 7
7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist.

The Word becomes flesh without ceasing to be the Word;
PHILIPPIANS 2:5–11
…though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men…

ROMANS 1:3
3 …concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh…

1 TIMOTHY 3:16
16 Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh…

HEBREWS 2:14
14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,

God’s nature is unchanging;
HEBREWS 13:8
8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

The Divine and the human nature become fully united without being fused;
JOHN 4:6
6 Jacob’s well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.

JOHN 11:33, 35
33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled…35 Jesus wept.

‘Tabernacled’ among us;
LUKE 9:58
58 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”

JOHN 7:2
2 Now the Jews’ Feast of Booths was at hand.

2 PETER 1:13–14
13 I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to stir you up by way of reminder, 14 since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me.

MARK 9:5
5 And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.”

EXODUS 33:7
7 Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, far off from the camp, and he called it the tent of meeting. And everyone who sought the LORD would go out to the tent of meeting, which was outside the camp.

MATTHEW 1:23 (See also: Isaiah 7:14)
23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).

Seen His glory;
JOHN 11:45
45 Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him…

One who seeks not glory for Himself, but His Father;
JOHN 5:44
44 How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?

JOHN 12:43
43 …for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.

JOHN 7:18
18 The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true…

JOHN 8:50
50 Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it…

Glory in His Signs;
JOHN 2:11
11 This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.

JOHN 11:4
4 But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

Glory in His death;
JOHN 13:31–32
31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once.

What is the Glory of the Son?;
EXODUS 33:18–23
18 Moses said, “Please show me your glory.” 19 And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The LORD.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. 20 But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.” 21 And the LORD said, “Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock, 22 and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by…

EXODUS 34:5–8
5 The LORD descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD. 6 The LORD passed before him and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, 7 keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.” 8 And Moses quickly bowed his head toward the earth and worshiped.

The glory is put on display. Some will see. Some will not;
JOHN 1:18
18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.

JOHN 1:35–37
35 The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.

JOHN 1:45–49
45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” 46 Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” 48 Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”

JOHN 12:10–11
10 So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well, 11 because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.
