In the Beginning Was the Word

To the Jew and to the Greek, the eternal Word is the center and the apex.

IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE WORD
JOHN 1:1-3

John’s purpose;
JOHN 20:30–31
30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

JOHN 8:24
24 “I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.”

JOHN 6:29
29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”

JOHN 15:6
6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned.

John’s method;
JOHN 20:2
2 …the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.”

―Crisis of belief―

The Baptizer, The Forerunner
JOHN 1:33–34
33 I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”

Jesus’ Mother, the Trusting One
JOHN 2:3–5
3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
Nathaniel, the Cynical One
JOHN 1:46–49
46 Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” 48 Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”

Nicodemus, The Inquisitive One
JOHN 3:3–4
3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”

The Woman at the Well, the Sinful One
JOHN 4:15–16
15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”

Peter, the Impulsive One
JOHN 6:66–69
66 After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. 67 So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, 69 and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”

Martha, the Dutiful One
JOHN 11:24–27
24 Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” 27 She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”

Thomas, the Skeptical One
JOHN 20:27–29
27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” 28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
The Word;
GENESIS 1:3
3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

GENESIS 15:1
1 After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.”

EXODUS 24:3–4
3 …And all the people answered with one voice and said, “All the words that the LORD has spoken we will do.” 4 And Moses wrote down all the words of the LORD…

DEUTERONOMY 5:5
5 …to declare to you the word of the LORD. For you were afraid because of the fire, and you did not go up into the mountain. He said:

JOEL 1:1
1 The word of the LORD that came to Joel, the son of Pethuel…

PSALM 119:105
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

1 CORINTHIANS 1:18
18 For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Uniting two cultures;
1 CORINTHIANS 1:22
22 For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom…

1 JOHN 1:1
1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life—

REVELATION 19:13
13 He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God.

The creating expression of God;
HEBREWS 1:1–3
1 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

The pre-existent Word;
JOHN 17:5
5 And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.

The timeless Word;
JUDE 25
25 to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever.

2 TIMOTHY 1:9
9 …who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began…

The Creator Word;
PSALM 90:1–2
1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. 2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

PROVERBS 8:27–30
27 When he established the heavens, I was there; when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, 28 when he made firm the skies above, when he established the fountains of the deep, 29 when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth, 30 then I was beside him, like a master workman, and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always,
