Enoch, the Seventh from Adam

Enoch is Scripture's premier example of one who walked with God.

ENOCH, THE SEVENTH FROM ADAM
JUDE 14

The ark, Passover, crucifixion, and resurrection;
GENESIS 8:4
4 …and in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.

EXODUS 12:2
2 “This month shall be for you the beginning of months. It shall be the first month of the year for you.”

EXODUS 12:18
18 In the first month, from the fourteenth day of the month at evening, you shall eat unleavened bread until the twenty-first day of the month at evening.

Enoch was comfortable in God’s company;
1 JOHN 4:16–18
16 So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. 17 By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.

Enoch delighted in God’s companionship and friendship;
PSALM 73:25
25 Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.

Enoch eschewed anything that would separate his walk;
1 PETER 4:1–2
1 Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 2 so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God.

ROMANS 8:5–8
5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. 6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. 8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

“Every sin is a fruit of being weary of God.” ―John Owen

Our “walk” with God;
COLOSSIANS 2:6
6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him.

GALATIANS 5:25
25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.

2 CORINTHIANS 5:7
7 …for we walk by faith, not by sight.

The crossroads of a life-walk;
LUKE 13:24
24 “Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.”

“Every temptation to sin is a fork in the road. God will always be found in the fork of the narrow road.”
―Albert Martin

The time of Enoch;
GENESIS 4:25–26
25 And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth, for she said, “God has appointed for me another offspring instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.” 26 To Seth also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh. At that time people began to call upon the name of the LORD.

MATTHEW 24:12
12 And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold.

Lamech, Enoch’s counterpart;
GENESIS 4:19, 23-24
19 And Lamech took two wives. The name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah…23 Lamech said to his wives: “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; you wives of Lamech, listen to what I say: I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me. 24 If Cain’s revenge is sevenfold, then Lamech’s is seventy-sevenfold.”

The patience of God;
GENESIS 5:21–24
21 When Enoch had lived 65 years, he fathered Methuselah. 22 Enoch walked with God after he fathered Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23 Thus all the days of Enoch were 365 years. 24 Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him.

2 PETER 3:8–9
8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
