By Faith, Enoch Was Taken

A life of walking with God prepares one not just for death, but also the very act of dying.

00:00 / 01:04

BY FAITH, ENOCH WAS TAKEN UP SO THAT HE SHOULD NOT SEE DEATH
JUDE 14-15; GENESIS 5:1-32; HEBREWS 11:1-6

―The taking of Enoch―
2 KINGS 2:5
5 The sons of the prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that today the LORD will take away [Elijah] from over you?”…

HEBREWS 11:5
5 By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God.

ACTS 7:15–16
15 And Jacob went down into Egypt, and he died, he and our fathers, 16 and they were carried back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that Abraham had bought for a sum of silver from the sons of Hamor in Shechem.

―The purpose of the taking of Enoch―

The pattern of fallen humanity;
GENESIS 3:19
19 “By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

GENESIS 3:15
15 “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”

After communicating to mankind the promise of the Messiah to come and the certainty of physical death as part of the wages of sin, the next redemption truth that God communicates is through the taking of Enoch.

The experience of fallen humanity;
GENESIS 5:3–24
3When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth.
4The days of Adam after he fathered Seth were 800 years; and he had other sons and daughters.
5Thus all the days that Adam lived were 930 years, and he died.
6When Seth had lived 105 years, he fathered Enosh.
7Seth lived after he fathered Enosh 807 years and had other sons and daughters.
8Thus all the days of Seth were 912 years, and he died.
9When Enosh had lived 90 years, he fathered Kenan.
10Enosh lived after he fathered Kenan 815 years and had other sons and daughters.
11Thus all the days of Enosh were 905 years, and he died.
12When Kenan had lived 70 years, he fathered Mahalalel.
13Kenan lived after he fathered Mahalalel 840 years and had other sons and daughters.
14Thus all the days of Kenan were 910 years, and he died.
15When Mahalalel had lived 65 years, he fathered Jared.
16Mahalalel lived after he fathered Jared 830 years and had other sons and daughters.
17Thus all the days of Mahalalel were 895 years, and he died.
18When Jared had lived 162 years, he fathered Enoch.
19Jared lived after he fathered Enoch 800 years and had other sons and daughters.
20Thus all the days of Jared were 962 years, and he died.
21When Enoch had lived 65 years, he fathered Methuselah.
22Enoch walked with God after he fathered Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters.
23Thus all the days of Enoch were 365 years.
24Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him.

The taking of Enoch is the first definite indication of immortality.

The prophecy concerning fallen humanity;
JUDE 14–15
14 It was also about these that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones, 15 to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have committed in such an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”

HEBREWS 11:6
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

The promise given to fallen humanity;
JOHN 11:25–26
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die…”

JOB 19:26
26 And after my skin has been thus destroyed, yet in my flesh I shall see God…

HEBREWS 11:1–6
1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 For by it the people of old received their commendation. 3 By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible... 5 By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God. 6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

JEREMIAH 29:13
13 You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.

Enoch: a type of Christ;
MATTHEW 3:17
17 And behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

COLOSSIANS 1:19
19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell…

ACTS 1:9
9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.

The taking of Enoch alludes to life eternal. The resurrection of Christ speaks clearly of life eternal.

―The encouragement of the taking of Enoch―

PSALM 23:4
4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

1 CORINTHIANS 15:54–55
54 When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” 55 “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”

HEBREWS 2:14–15
14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.

ROMANS 8:38–39
38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The testimony of Enoch: A life of walking with God prepares one not just for death, but also the very act of dying.
