Do Not Work for the Food that Perishes

Jesus came not to serve unregenerate appetites, but to give new appetites.

DO NOT WORK FOR THE FOOD THAT PERISHES JOHN 6:1-32 The Prophet who is to come; DEUTERONOMY 18:15 15 “The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers—it is to him you shall listen.” HEBREWS 1:1–2 1 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. Jesus desired to be connected with Moses, but in a different way; HEBREWS 3:1–3 1 Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, 2 who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house. 3 For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. Recognizing Jesus as the fulfillment of prophecy requires recognizing His supremacy to over all the prophets who spoke of Him. The King who would be forced into kingship; PHILIPPIANS 2:10–11 10 …at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. God made in the image of man; EXODUS 32:4 4 And he received the gold from their hand and fashioned it with a graving tool and made a golden calf. And they said, “These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!” Playing mind games with ourselves; ISAIAH 44:14–17 14 He cuts down cedars, or he chooses a cypress tree or an oak and lets it grow strong among the trees of the forest. He plants a cedar and the rain nourishes it. 15 Then it becomes fuel for a man. He takes a part of it and warms himself; he kindles a fire and bakes bread. Also he makes a god and worships it; he makes it an idol and falls down before it. 16 Half of it he burns in the fire. Over the half he eats meat; he roasts it and is satisfied. Also he warms himself and says, “Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire!” 17 And the rest of it he makes into a god, his idol, and falls down to it and worships it. He prays to it and says, “Deliver me, for you are my god!” The most harmful of all of sin’s deceptions is the deception of the sinner into believing he/she is worshiping God, when they are actually worshiping themselves. When seeking Jesus makes Jesus angry; ACTS 8:18–20 18 Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money, 19 saying, “Give me this power also, so that anyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” 20 But Peter said to him, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money!” The new birth brings new appetites; 2 CORINTHIANS 5:17 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 1 PETER 2:2–3 2 Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. PSALM 2:10–12 10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. 11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. 12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him. “Jesus came not to serve unregenerate appetites, but to give new appetites.” ―John Piper The hunger that is truly satisfied; MATTHEW 5:6 6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” PSALM 34:8 8 Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! 3/22/2026
